abstract = {This study examines the potential of a new type of floating seawall, made up of retired large-scale oceangoing vessels, to be used in open water and exposed coastal areas. The main objectives of the research are to assess the effectiveness of the floating seawall concept, to determine the contribution of the gap resonance to wave attenuation, and to compare the results of physical tests with those obtained numerically using ANSYS-AQWA. The use of end-of-life ships in this way provides a unique opportunity to extend their life cycle and reduce the environmental and human health risks associated with the current practice of shipbreaking. The research focuses on a multimodule floating seawall configuration, where each module is composed of two hulls that are rigidly connected side by side, with a small gap to induce gap resonance. The results suggest that end-of-life ships can be used as a resource for the construction of floating seawalls for various marine applications. Furthermore, the results demonstrate the positive influence of the gap resonance on the wave attenuation capacity of the seawall, as well as the limitations of the numerical tool in providing realistic values in this region.},

abstract = {Driven by population growth and rural migration toward the cities, the demand for affordable housing continues to increase. However, due to the scarcity of urban development space—especially in coastal areas, the supply is limited. As increasing land availability is one of the most effective ways to reduce real estate costs, this interdisciplinary research explores the alternative of urban expansion toward the adjacent marine environment of coastal cities. It focuses on floating residential dwellings from both technological and urban planning perspective, aiming to include the waterfront of coastal cities as viable, sustainable, and affordable alternative for urban development. The research takes on one of the most expensive cities in the world, Tel Aviv-Yafo, as a case study for increasing the supply of affordable housing in addition to vital sustainable future growth in the adjacent marine environment.},

abstract = {The boundary element method (BEM) with Lagrangian formulation is a conceptually simple and efficient method for the simulation of nonlinear wave shoaling, with or without impermeable coastal structures, up to the wave breaking. However, in post-breaking flows, the domain is no longer simply connected, and the BEM is not efficient for the generation of a new free surface. Volumes of fluid (VOF) methods are made to track the fluid-free surfaces after breaking, but they are more numerically complex and less efficient relative to the BEM before breaking. This study presents a numerical model, named BELWF—boundary elements Lagrangian wave flume—for the mathematical simulation of two-dimensional wave flumes. The BELWF can simulate the hydrodynamics of wave shoaling over a coast profile, with submerged impermeable coastal structures of any geometry. The developed model is applied to simulate and study Geotube structures. The BELWF is validated by comparisons with OpenFOAM simulations. Both the BELWF and OpenFOAM simulations show that the most critical state, regarding the sliding stability of the Geotube, occurs, typically just before breaking, where the BELWF reasonably assesses the wave loads and the sliding stability. Hence, the BELWF is a valid and efficient method for the preliminary design of impermeable coastal structures. Finally, the BELWF is applied to simulate a practical design example of a complete shoaling process along a sloped shore with a Geotube structure at the shallow water, which develops a plunging breaker. The simulation well captures the critical event considering the sliding stability of the structure.},

abstract = {X-band radars are in growing use for various oceanographic purposes, providing spatial real-time information about sea state parameters, surface elevations, currents, and bathymetry. Therefore, it is very appealing to use such systems as operational aids to harbour management. In an installation of such a remote sensing system in Haifa Port, consistent radially aligned spikes of brightness randomly distributed with respect to azimuth were identified. These streak noise patterns were found to be interfering with the common approach of oceanographic analysis. Harbour areas are regularly frequented with additional electromagnetic transmissions from other ship and land-based radars, which may serve as a source of such interference. A new approach is proposed for the filtering of such undesirable interference patterns from the X-band radar images. It was verified with comparison to in-situ measurements of a nearby wave buoy. Regardless of the actual source of the corresponding pseudo-wave energy, it was found to be crucial to apply such filtration in order to improve the performance of the standard oceanographic parameter retrieval algorithm. This results in better estimation of the mean sea state parameters towards lower values of the significant wave height.},

abstract = {Accurate information on port shipping activities is critical for monitoring global and local traffic flows and assessing the state of development of the maritime industry. Such information is necessary for managers and analysts to make strategic decisions and monitor the maritime industry in achieving management goals. In this study, we used monthly night light (NTL) images of the Suomi National Polar-Orbiting Partnership (Suomi NPP) Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) Day/Night Band, between 2012 and 2020, to study the night lights emitted by ships in ports’ anchorage areas, as an indicator for shipping activity in anchorage areas and ports. Using a dataset covering 601 anchorage areas from 97 countries, we found a strong correspondence between NTL data and shipping metrics at the country level (n = 97), such as container port throughput (Rs = 0.84, p < 0.01) and maximum cargo carried by ships (Rs = 0.66, p < 0.01), as well as a strong correlation between the number of anchorage points and the NTL values in anchorage areas across the world (Rs = 0.69, p < 0.01; n = 601). The high correspondence levels of the VIIRS NTL data with various shipping indicators show the potential of using NTL data to analyze the spatio-temporal dynamic changes of the shipping activity in anchorage areas, providing convenient open access and a normalized assessment method for shipping industry parameters that are often lacking.},

abstract = {Very large floating structure (VLFS) is an environmentally sensitive technology which creates artificial land at sea. Designated for the open sea, the Delta is a new type of VLFS. Formed, inherently, by the innovative geometry, the sheltered basin is a unique feature of the Delta. Its year-round operability as the gateway of the structure directly affects the Delta’s utilization. This study examines the basin in terms of its operability as a service port. Relying on potential flow theory and applying the boundary element method, we conducted a nonlinear hydrodynamic analysis of a moored vessel at the basin. It consists of a time-domain simulation of a tanker, berthed via nonlinear mooring system along the Delta’s side hull under severe wave conditions typical to the East Mediterranean Sea. The system is evaluated in terms of acceptable motion of the ship and permissible load on the mooring system. The favorable results indicate that the basin enables most cargo handling operations under waves conditions of Hmo=2.5 m, and minimal downtime of less than 6% of the year. In this paper we present the analysis procedure, the evaluation criteria, and the mooring system’s design. The study results and their significance are presented and discussed as well.},

The largest waves observed do display similar characteristics to those of the Draupner, Andrea, and El Faro rogue waves in that second order bound nonlinearities enhance the linear dispersive focusing of extreme waves. We also present a novel analysis of waves in space-time to predict potential risks posed by such large waves to navigation. In particular, we consider the scenario of two types of vessels of the Israeli Navy fleet navigating during the most intense stages of the two storms considered here and provide predictions for the largest waves likely to be encountered.},

abstract = {There is a lack of scientific knowledge about the physical sea characteristics of the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea. The current work offers a comprehensive view of wave fields in southern Israel waters covering a period between January 2017 and June 2018. The analyzed data were collected by a meteorological buoy providing wind and wave parameters. As expected for this area, the strongest storm events occurred throughout October–April. In this paper, we analyze the buoy data following two main objectives—identifying the most appropriate statistical distribution model and examining wave data in search of rogue wave presence. The objectives were accomplished by comparing a number of models suitable for deep seawater waves. The Tayfun–Fedele third-order model showed the best agreement with the tail of the empirical wave height distribution. The examination of different statistical thresholds for the identification of rogue waves resulted in the detection of 109 unique waves, all of relatively low height. The characteristics of the detected rogue waves were examined, revealing that the majority of them presented crest-to-trough symmetry. This finding calls for a reevaluation of the crest amplitude being equal to or above 1.25, the significant wave height threshold which assumes rogue waves carry most of their energy in the crest.},

abstract = {Very large floating structure (VLFS) is a sustainable concept centered around creating solid platforms at sea. The Delta is a new type of VLFS, designed to withstand open-sea conditions and to form, in addition to a broad deck areas, a sheltered basin of year-round operability. The design of this unique hull relies on direct calculations in order to identify critical load cases and assess their load effects. This study formulates a theoretical procedure for the initial assessment of the primary strength. The procedure analytically integrates the floatation loads while the hull rests at hydrostatic equilibrium on a wave surface and obtains the vertical and horizontal bending moment. This preliminary assessment tool enables a fast review of many load cases and provides the basic insights necessary for a reasonable initial design. Using the procedure, we conducted a primary load assessment for the design of Delta. By calculating the load response to 588 load cases, we identified the critical load scenario and the maximal axial stress. As the stress was too high, we improved the geometry in order to reduce loads and assessed proper scantlings for the critical section. We present the formulation of the procedure, the validation of the results, and the implementation for the structural design of the Delta VLFS.},

abstract = {Ship-generated oil pollution is a significant threat to the Mediterranean Sea. We present a geostatistical analysis of oil spills using three databases for the Mediterranean Sea: REMPEC (1977–2000) with 385 spills (17/year), ITOPF (1970–2018) with 167 spills (3.5/year) and EMSA (2015–2017) with 2066 detections (688/year). It was found that 88% of spills reported by REMPEC occurred near coastline areas, while 65% of the spills detected by EMSA occurred within a range of 22–100 km from the coastline. At the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) level, EMSA oil spills densities were positively correlated with shipping and port activity. We conclude that there is a need to develop an open-access database of oil spills that will be based on both reports and remote sensing acquisition methods. Such a database will facilitate more efficient enforcement of international conventions in offshore areas and will increase the likelihood of effective response.},

abstract = {Abstract Time series of sea level measurements from different instruments deployed around the Haifa Bay area are analyzed. All observations indicate the existence of persistent low frequency oscillations with periods corresponding to approximately 1 hour and to approximately 30 minutes. These oscillations are persistent throughout most of the year and reached maximal wave heights of around 30 cm, a comparable value to tidal variations, making these oscillations an important factor in determining the average sea level elevation. The work identifies the phenomenon as resonant trapped waves, which are normal modes of the continental shelf extending from Haifa promontory to Achziv Canyon. Their temporal and spatial characteristics are learned through field measurement data analysis, wavelet analysis, numerical simulations, and exploration of an analytic solution. Finally, possible mechanisms for the generation of these waves are discussed. Such waves, which are commonly not surveyed, can be an important factor affecting coastal dynamics such as breaker line and coast line locations. Furthermore, the resonance behavior found has the capability of increasing the deep-to-shallow amplitudes in up to two orders of magnitude depending on incident angle. Noting that seismic or atmospheric events can agitate oscillation with similar wave periods, the intensification poses a hazard to Haifa Bay and coastal area.},

abstract = {The concept of Modular Floating Structures (MFS) offers a unique avenue to explore new and sustainable ways for addressing issues of coastal urbanization and sea level rise in the proximity of coastal cities. This concept is easily implemented in calm waters without the interference of waves. Yet, its implementation in open water, poses greater challenges, particularly in terms of habitability and comfort. The current study examines the feasibility of the concept in two locations: in mild sea zone near Singapore and in open water conditions at the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Both conditions are examined in operational and extreme storms. It is shown that the MFS configuration can attenuate incident waves of short periods. This reduces the motion amplitudes of the inner modules with respect to the exterior modules facing the waves. It is also presented that during extreme storms, the chosen configuration is less effective, and the motion amplitudes of all modules within the MFS fabric are almost identical. To further increase the acceptable sea states, the study proposes a unique floating seawall design, which provides a substantial wave reduction in long wave periods. The study presents the efficiency of the new configuration in operational weather and a 100-years storm.},

abstract = {We report the development of a new method for accurate detection of breaking water waves that addresses the need for an accurate and cost-effective method that is independent of human decisions. The new detection method, which enables the detection of breakers using only surface elevation fluctuation measurements from a single wave gauge, supports the development of a new method for research relating to water waves and wind–wave interactions. According to the proposed method, detection is based on the use of the phase-time method to identify breaking-associated patterns in the instantaneous frequency variations of surface elevation fluctuations. A wavelet-based pattern recognition algorithm is devised to detect such patterns and provide accurate detection of breakers in the examined records. Validation and performance tests, conducted using both laboratory and open-sea data, including mechanically generated and wind-forced waves, are reported as well. These tests allow us to derive a set of parameters that assure high detection accuracy rates. The method is shown to be capable to achieve a positive detection rate exceeding 90%.},

abstract = {Land scarcity in and around coastal cities is a growing problem in both industrialized and developing nations. The lack of development areas increases the tension between infrastructure needs, urban needs and nature – impacting both growth and quality of life. This study advocates that floating structures can offer a unique avenue to explore new and sustainable ways of addressing these issues. Recognizing that no comprehensive analysis or study on the legal requirements needed for the realization of such projects has yet been conducted, the study's first aim is to define the required design guidelines by synthesizing statutory requirements, building codes and international regulations. From a statutory perspective, these encompass two disciplines: civil engineering and naval architecture. To this end, a preliminary design of a Modular Floating Structures (MFS) module is presented, reconciling the design requirements of the two disciplines, in order to proof the feasibility of the MFS technology for urban use offshore. The study mainly focuses on structural and safety aspects, and sheds light on other crucial factors for offshore dwelling feasibility, such as occupant comfort.},

abstract = {Abstract The flow of water through coral reefs controls the transport of mass, momentum, and energy and, as a result, affects key processes such as feeding, photosynthesis, and reproduction. While it is often analyzed as a typical canopy flow, the flow through coral reefs is different from both terrestrial and aquatic canopies. A combination of a nonuniform vertical distribution of porosity and resistance and variations in relative submergence generates regions of high-velocity gradients, increased integral length scales and instabilities which have not previously been quantified in detail. Here we report on velocity measurements inside and above a laboratory reef made of 81 Pocillopora Meandrina skeletons, for a range of relative submergence and flow rates. Under the action of a pressure gradient, the mean velocity shows an increase in the wake zone, generating a potential source for mixing due to a second inflection point. Unlike classical boundary layers and other canopy flows, a quadrant analysis shows that the number of inward/outward interactions events is larger than sweeps/ejections inside the canopy wake zone, due to the sign change in the mean velocity gradient. The vertical distribution of the integral length scales shows a local maximum in the lower part of the wake zone. Finally, under fully submerged conditions, the stream-wise turbulent energy spectra inside the reef follow an approximate , as opposed to the expected behavior above the reef. Under near-emergent conditions, no fit to such a power law could be obtained.},
